The number one cause of mystery software is the installer you didn’t read all the way through.

When you factory reset a Windows PC (sometimes called a reformat), you’re given a choice: keep your files, or remove everything. It sounds straightforward, but the “keep my files” option trips a lot of people up.

You download a new app, open it for the first time, and a pop-up appears: "Allow this app to access your contacts?" Most people tap "Allow" without a second thought.

Scammers call this approach "pig butchering," borrowing from an agricultural practice: fattening the pig before the slaughter.
